Can’t connect to WhatsApp

If you’re unable to send or receive messages on WhatsApp, you might not have an internet connection. To check your device’s internet connection:

  • See if there's a clock icon next to your messages instead of a check mark. If there is, it means your messages aren't getting delivered.
  • Check the network signal on your device to see if it's blinking or empty.

Troubleshooting

Most connection issues can be resolved by doing one or more of the following:

Device settings

  • Restart your device by turning it off and back on.
  • Open your device's Settings > tap Network & internet > turn Airplane mode on and off.
  • Open your device's Settings > tap Network & internet > Internet. Next to your carrier, tap the Settings icon. Turn Mobile data on.
  • Open your device's Settings > tap Apps > WhatsApp > Mobile data & Wi-Fi > turn Background data on.
  • Update WhatsApp to the latest version available on the Google Play Store.
  • Upgrade your Android operating system to the latest version available for your device.

Wi-Fi settings

  • Open your device's Settings > Network & internet > Internet > turn Wi-Fi off and on.
  • Try connecting to different Wi-Fi hotspots.
  • Make sure Wi-Fi stays on during sleep mode.
  • Reboot your Wi-Fi router.
  • Contact your mobile provider and make sure your APN settings are configured correctly.
  • If you're having trouble connecting to WhatsApp while on a Wi-Fi network that you don't normally connect to, contact the network administrator.
  • Make sure your connection isn't on a managed Wi-Fi network, such as at your office or university campus. Your network might be configured to block or limit connections.

Other settings

  • WhatsApp isn't designed to be used with proxy or VPN services. We don’t support these configurations.
  • Turn off roaming.
