How to back up to Google Drive

In order to use Google Drive backup, you’ll need:

  • A Google account activated on your device.
  • Google Play services installed on your device. This is an app that’s used to update Google apps and apps from the Google Play Store.
  • Enough free space on your device to create the backup.
  • A strong and stable internet connection.
Set up Google Drive backups
  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up to Google Drive.
  3. Select a backup frequency other than Never.
  4. Select the Google account you’d like to back up your chat history to.
    • If you don't have a Google account connected, tap Add account when prompted and enter your login credentials.
  5. Tap Back up over to choose the network you want to use for backups.

Note: Backing up over a cellular data network might result in additional data charges.

Turn on end-to-end encrypted backup

For an additional layer of security, you can turn on end-to-end encryption for your Google Drive backup.

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
  3. Tap TURN ON.
  4. Create a password or use a 64-digit encryption key instead.
  5. Tap Create to create your end-to-end encrypted backup.
Manually back up to Google Drive

You can also choose to manually back up your chats to Google Drive at any time.

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > BACK UP.

Configure your Google Drive backup settings

Change the frequency of your Google Drive backup
  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up to Google Drive.
  3. Select a backup frequency.
Change the account you want to use for backups
  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Google Account.
  3. Select the Google account you’d like to back up your chat history to.

Note: If you change your Google account, you’ll lose access to any backups saved in that account.

Change the type of network you want to use for backups
  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up over
  3. Select the type of network you want to use for backup.
