How to edit photos and videos

You can personalize your photos and videos by adding stickers, emoji, text, freehanded drawings, and filters and more.

Editing photos and videos

Take a new photo or video

  1. Tap
    camera
    , then take a new photo or video.
  2. Start editing your photo or video.

Use an existing photo or video

  1. Tap
    camera
    >
    photo video library
    , then choose an existing item from your Albums.
  2. Start editing your photo or video.

Adjust the quality of your photo or video message

Tap
hd media
, then tap:
    • Standard quality to send a standard quality photo or video. Standard quality photos and videos use less data and are sent faster than HD quality photos and videos.
    • HD quality to send a high quality photo or video. HD quality photos and videos are clearer than Standard quality photos and videos, but use more data and take longer to send.
Note: HD media isn’t currently available for status updates or profile pictures.

Crop or rotate your photo or video

  1. Tap
    crop rotate
    .
    • Tap the
      aspect ratio
      button to select one of the presets.
    • To manually crop your media, drag any of the handles in or out to the desired size.
    • To rotate your photo or video, tap
      repeatedly.
    • Tap Reset to undo all your changes and revert to the original size and rotation.
  2. Tap Done when you’ve finished.

Trim a video

  1. Drag the slider at the top to trim the video.
  2. Tap
    play
    to preview your newly trimmed video.

Apply a filter to your photo or video

  1. Swipe up on your photo or video.
  2. Select a filter.
  3. Tap Done to continue editing.

Add stickers or emojis to your photo or video

  1. Tap
    sticker
    > Stickers or Emoji.
  2. Tap the item that you’d like to use.
    • To move the item, tap and hold it, then drag it.
    • To resize the item, pinch in or out to make it smaller or larger.
    • To rotate the item, pinch and turn it.
  3. Tap anywhere on the photo or video when you’ve finished.
  4. To delete an emoji or sticker, drag it to
    delete editing status
    .

Add text to your photo or video

  1. Tap
    text
    .
  2. Enter your text in the text field.
  3. Tap Done when you’ve finished.
  4. To delete a text box, drag it to
    delete editing status
    .

Change the appearance of your text

  1. Tap the text box:
    • To change the text color, slide your finger up and down the Color selector.
    • Tap the font type at the bottom of the screen to select a font.
  2. Tap Done to make other changes to your text.
    • To resize the text, pinch in or out to make it smaller or larger.
    • To rotate the text, pinch and turn the text box.
    • To move the text box, drag it to a new location.

Add a caption

Enter a caption in the text box.

Draw on your photo or video

  1. Tap
    draw
    .
  2. Select the pen color and thickness.
    • To change the pen color, slide your finger up and down the Color selector.
    • You can change the pen thickness by tapping one of the
      pen width medium
      icons below your photo.
  3. Use your finger to create freehanded drawings.
    • To delete a line, tap
      undo
      .
  4. Tap Done when you’ve finished.

Blur all or part of your photo

  1. Tap
    draw
    >
    pen width medium
    .
  2. Use your finger to blur any part of your photo.
    • Tap
      undo
      to undo the blur effect.
  3. Tap Done when you’ve finished.

Mute your video

Tap
mute video
to turn off the audio in your video.

Send your media

Once you’ve finished editing your media, tap
brush small
. Tap the contact or group to send your media and tap Send.
Note: It's not possible to edit media when sharing to WhatsApp directly from other apps on iPhone. We recommend downloading the media to your device first if you want to edit it before sending.
