How to manage your notifications

Notification preferences can easily be managed in your WhatsApp settings.
Manage WhatsApp notifications settings
  1. Tap
    > Settings > Notifications.
  2. Manage notifications settings by performing one of the following actions:
    • Tap Conversation tones to toggle conversation tones on or off for incoming and outgoing messages.
    • Tap Notification tone under Messages or Groups to change the notification tone of individual or group messages.
    • Tap Vibrate under Messages, Groups, or Calls to change the duration of WhatsApp's notification vibrations.
    • Tap Popup notification under Messages to turn on or turn off popup notifications.
    • Tap Light under Messages or Groups to change the color of message or group notifications on your device.
    • Tap Use high priority notifications to show previews of notifications at the top of your screen.
    • Tap Reaction Notifications to receive notifications of reactions to messages you send.
    • Tap Ringtone under Calls to change the ringtone of incoming calls.
Reset notifications settings
  1. Tap
    > Settings > Notifications.
  2. Tap
    > Reset notification settings > Reset.
Manage notifications for individual or group chats
  1. Open an individual or group chat.
  2. Tap the name of the individual or group.
  3. Tap Custom notifications.
  4. Check Use custom notifications.
  5. Manage notification settings by performing one of the following actions:
    • Tap Notification tone to change the notification tone of individual or group messages.
    • Tap Vibrate to change the duration of WhatsApp's notification vibrations.
    • Tap Popup notification to turn on or turn off popup notifications.
    • Tap Light to change the color of message or group notifications on your device.
    • Tap Use high priority notifications to show previews of notifications at the top of your screen.
Mute notifications for individual or group chats
  1. Open an individual or group chat.
  2. Tap the name of the individual or group chat.
  3. Tap Mute notifications.
  4. Select the length of time you’d like to mute notifications for, then tap OK.
Tap Mute notifications again to unmute notifications for a chat.
Note: When you mute message notifications for a chat, your device won’t alert you of incoming notifications. However, it’s important to remember:
  • Contacts aren't notified that you’ve muted the chat.
  • Contacts will still receive read receipts when you read their messages.
  • You’ll still have the unread message count next to the chat.
Mute WhatsApp notifications on your device
  1. Go to device Settings > Apps & notifications.
  2. Tap WhatsApp > Notifications > Show notifications.
  3. Turn off:
    • Show notifications or All WhatsApp notifications to disable all notifications.
    • Group notifications to disable group chat notifications.
    • Message notifications to disable individual chat notifications.
  4. To silence notifications, tap a notification category > Silent.
Note: If you disable or silence WhatsApp group or message notifications from device settings, updates made to notification settings in WhatsApp won’t override them. However, if you enable custom notifications for a chat in WhatsApp, a new notification category will be added in your device settings, with notifications enabled for that custom setting.
Manage notification previews on your device
You can choose to hide the content of WhatsApp messages from the notification previews that are displayed on your phone’s lock screen.
To turn lock screen notifications on or off:
  1. Go to your phone’s Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lockscreen.
  2. Select one of the following options:
    • Show conversations, default, and silent
    • Hide silent conversations and notifications
    • Don't show any notifications
