How to talk to Meta AI with voice

You can easily have interactive voice conversations with Meta AI. Meta AI will respond with voice and text and you’ll see a transcript of your voice prompts in the chat. Messages from Meta AI are generated by artificial intelligence (AI), using a service from Meta, in response to the prompts you send to the AI.
Note:
  • Meta AI and some experiences are currently only available in limited countries and might not be available to you yet, even if others in your country have access.
  • At this time, only English is supported.
When you talk with Meta AI you can:
  • Brainstorm
  • Ask questions hands-free
  • Receive helpful recommendations
  • Talk about interests
  • Create AI-generated images
Talking with Meta AI and sending voice prompts is optional. To use this feature, you have to grant WhatsApp permission to access your microphone. You also have to be actively using this feature for it to access your microphone. When sending voice prompts to Meta AI, you can see when your microphone is on and can mute it at any time by tapping

AI messages and prompts are different from personal messages and calls. When you choose to interact with Meta AI, Meta receives your messages and prompts to generate responses and improve its AI quality. You have the option to delete your interactions with Meta AI. As always, your personal messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning no one outside of the chat, not even WhatsApp or Meta, can read, listen to, or share them.

Get started

You might be prompted to read and accept the Meta's AI Terms of Service if you haven’t done so already.
If you haven’t already granted permission for WhatsApp to access your microphone, you’ll be prompted to do so before you can send a voice prompt to Meta AI.

Talk to Meta AI with voice

As we continue to test new ways to improve interactions with Meta AI, some users might see the following experiences.
You have the option to start a voice conversation when chatting with Meta AI. It’s up to you to choose to interact with Meta AI with text or voice.

From the Chats tab


  1. Tap
    meta ai (multicolored ring)
    on the Chats tab.
  2. Tap
    voice (phone within circle)
    .
  3. Start speaking.
  4. Stop speaking when you’re finished to send your prompt.

From the Calls tab

  1. Tap
    voice (phone within circle)
    on the Calls tab.
  2. Start speaking.
  3. Stop speaking when you’re finished to send your prompt.
To end and exit the voice experience, tap
voice (phone within circle)

In a chat with Meta AI

  1. Open the chat with Meta AI.
  2. Tap
    voice (phone)
    .
  3. Start speaking.
  4. Stop speaking when you’re finished to send your prompt.

Ask Meta AI to create an AI-generated image

  1. Open the chat with Meta AI.
  2. Tap
    voice (phone within circle)
    or
    voice (phone)
    .
  3. Describe the image you’d like to create.
  4. Stop speaking when you’re finished to send your prompt.
Once the AI image is generated, you can choose to share the image to a chat, edit the image, or ask Meta AI to try again to re-generate the image. Learn more about AI-generated images in this article.

Exit the voice experience

To end and exit the voice experience, tap
voice (phone within circle)

Voice settings

Change the voice of Meta AI


You have the option to change Meta AI’s voice.
  1. Open the chat with Meta AI.
  2. Tap Meta AI at the top of the chat.
  3. Tap Voice.
  4. Select a voice and tap
    back (left arrow)
    to return to the chat.
Alternatively, tap
voice settings (control panel)
during a voice conversation with Meta AI and select a voice.

Choose to start with a voice conversation with Meta AI


You have the option to start a voice conversation when you tap
meta ai (multicolored ring)
to open the chat with Meta AI and turn on Start with voice in voice settings. Start with voice is turned off by default.
  1. Open the chat with Meta AI.
  2. Tap Meta AI at the top of the chat.
  3. Tap Voice.
  4. You can choose to start with voice on or off.

Multitask with Meta AI

When you start a voice conversation with Meta AI, you can continue having the voice conversation with Meta AI whether you’re browsing WhatsApp or doing something else on your phone. You’ll see a timer and a notification on your lock screen and can end the conversation at any time. Learn more in this article.

Provide feedback

You can provide feedback to Meta about responses from Meta AI.
  1. Tap and hold the AI message you’d like to provide feedback on.
  2. Tap Good response or Bad response.
    • Alternatively, tap
      thumbs up (thumbs up)
      or
      thumbs down (thumbs down)
      .
  3. If prompted, add a reason, then tap Submit.
Note:
  • Meta uses AI chats consistent with Meta's Privacy Policy. By using this feature, you agree to Meta's AI Terms of Service.
  • You have the option to delete individual chats with AIs or request the deletion of information you previously shared with Meta AI. Learn more in this article.
  • Some messages generated by AIs might not be accurate or appropriate.
