How to exit a group as a member

You can exit a group if you no longer want to be in it. Once you exit a group, you’ll have the option to delete it on your device.
Note: Only admins can delete groups for all members. If your an admin, you can learn learn how to exit and delete a group in this article.

What happens when you exit and delete a group

When you exit a group, only group admins will be notified of your exit. When you delete a group, you’ll no longer see it in your Chats list and the group chat history will be erased from your phone.
Your profile name and phone number will be shown in the Past members list in Group info. Your profile photo may also be shown, depending on your settings. Group members can see your information in the Past members list for up to 60 days after you leave the group.
It's not possible to restore a group once it's been deleted. To rejoin a group chat you’ve left, you’ll need to ask the group admin to re-invite you. Learn more in this article.

Community groups

If the group is part of a community, you’ll also exit the community. If you exit a community, you’ll also exit groups in the community.

Exit a group

  1. Open the group chat, then click the group name.
  2. Click Exit group > Exit group.

Delete a group

Once you exit a group, you’ll see the option to delete it.
Note: It's not possible to restore a group once it's been deleted.
  1. Open the group chat, then click the group name.
  2. Click the Delete group > Delete group.
