How to use status

We’re building and testing out new features, like Status Mentions, and they may not be available to you yet. In the meantime, we recommend keeping WhatsApp updated on your device so you can get the feature as soon as it's available.
You can use Status to share photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. Click
status unread
to see status updates from you and your contacts.
You can see your contacts’ statuses under Recent. Statuses from muted contacts are hidden under Muted. Click Show to see the muted statuses or click Hide to hide them.

Create and share a status

You can choose who can see your status by adding them to your status audience or mentioning them.
Note:
  • People you mentioned can reshare the content of your status to their audience.
  • You can mention people who aren’t in your contacts.

To create and share a text status:
  1. Click
    status
    > Text.
  2. Type your status update.
    • Click
      text
      to change the font.
    • Click
      color
      to change the background color.
    • Click
      emoji
      to add an emoji.
    • Click Status (Contacts) to customize your audience.
  3. Click
    share
    to share your status.
To create and share a photo status:
  1. Click
    status
    > My Status > Photos & videos.
  2. Select a photo from your device.
    • Click Add a caption to caption your photo.
    • Click
      text
      to add text. You can adjust color, font, size, layout, and add a background.
    • Click
      emoji
      to add an emoji.
    • Click
      sticker
      to add a sticker.
    • Click
      draw
      to draw. You can adjust the color and line size.
    • Click
      blur
      to blur.
    • Click
      crop and rotate
      to crop or rotate.
    • Click Status (Contacts) to customize your audience.
  3. Click
    share
    to share your status.
Note:
  • HD media isn’t supported for status updates.
  • The quality of media, such as images, GIFs, videos, and pictures uploaded into WhatsApp Status may be lower than the original version.
  • Upload high quality images to status to prevent low quality photos.
To create and share a video status:
  1. Click
    status
    > My Status > Photos & videos.
  2. Select a video from your device.
    • Click Add a caption to caption your video.
    • Click
      emoji
      to add an emoji to your caption.
    • Click Status (Contacts) to customize your audience.
  3. Click
    share
    to share your status.
Note: WhatsApp supports 3GP and MPEG-4 video formats.

View a status

Click
status
to open the Status tab and click your contact’s profile picture to view their status. Users can see if you view their status, unless you or they have disabled read receipts.
To see who has viewed your status:
  1. Click
    status
    > My status.
  2. While the status is displayed, click the eye icon.
Note: New statuses have a green ring around them. Viewed statuses have a gray ring.

Reply and react to a status

Reactions and replies to statuses are sent to your shared chat and labeled as Status. Go to the Chats tab to see them.
To respond to a status:
  1. Click
    status
    .
  2. Click your contact’s profile picture.
  3. While the status is displayed, click Type a Reply…
  4. Type your reply.
    • Click
      emoji
      to add an emoji.
  5. Click
    share
    to share.
To react to a status:
  1. Click
    status
    .
  2. Click your contact’s profile picture.
  3. While the status is displayed, click Type a Reply…
    • Click one of the displayed emojis to react with an emoji.
    • Click
      sticker
      to react with a sticker.
  4. As soon as you tap a sticker or emoji, it'll be sent to your shared chat.

Delete or edit a status

You can't edit a status, but you can delete it and share a new one.
  1. Click
    status
    > My status.
  2. While the status is displayed, click
    more options
    .
  3. Click Delete > Delete.
