How to add, edit, or delete a contact

You can add new contacts and share, edit, or delete your existing contacts in WhatsApp on your mobile device.

Add a contact

You can add a contact with a new chat, save someone’s number from a chat, or add contacts from a group.
If you have contact permissions and WhatsApp contacts turned on, you can choose which contacts on WhatsApp sync to your phone.
To check your contact permissions, go to your phone’s Settings and tap Privacy & Security > Contacts > WhatsApp.

Add a contact with a new chat

  1. Tap Chats >
    new chat
    > New contact and enter contact details.
  2. Tap Done.
    • To sync contact your phone's address book, tap Sync contact to phone.

Add a contact from an existing chat

  1. Tap Chats.
  2. Tap the chat with your contact.
    • You will see their phone number instead of their name.
  3. Tap their phone number.
  4. Tap Add to contacts > Create New.
  5. Tap Done.
    • To sync contact your phone's address book, tap Sync contact to phone.

Add a contact from groups

  1. Open the group.
  2. Next to one of their messages, tap their profile photo.
  3. Tap Create New Contact and enter contact details.
  4. Tap Done.
    • To sync contact your phone's address book, tap Sync contact to phone.

Edit a contact

  1. Tap the search bar and enter their name.
  2. Tap the contact, then tap their name.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap Done.
    • To sync contact your phone's address book, tap Sync contact to phone.
Note: WhatsApp users choose their own profile photo. If a contact didn't set a profile photo, you can’t add one for that contact.

Share a contact in chats

  1. Open the individual or group chat.
  2. Tap
    add item
    > Contact.
  3. Select the contact.
  4. Tap Next > Send.
The recipient can add the contact to their address book or message them directly from the message.

Delete a contact

  1. Tap the search bar and enter their name.
  2. Tap the contact, then tap their name.
  3. Tap Edit > Delete Contact.
Note:
  • If you’ve synced this contact to your phone by turning WhatsApp contacts on, they will be deleted from your phone’s address book.
  • Deleting a contact won't delete the chat history you have with them. Learn how to delete a chat.

Delete a blocked contact

  1. Go to your WhatsApp Settings > Privacy > Blocked.
  2. Tap the contacts name > Edit > Delete Contact.
