You can easily add new contacts and share, edit, or delete your existing contacts within WhatsApp.
Add a contact
There are several ways to add a contact. You can add a contact with a new chat, save someone’s number from a chat, or add contacts from a group.
If you have contact permissions enabled for your phone’s address book and WhatsApp contacts turned on, you can choose which contacts on WhatsApp to sync to your phone.
- You can check if you have contact permissions enabled by going to your phone’s Settings > WhatsApp > Contacts.
- You can check if you have WhatsApp contacts turned on by going to your WhatsApp Settings > Privacy Settings > turn WhatsApp contacts on. Learn more about WhatsApp contacts in this help article.
Add contact with a new chat
- Go to the Chats tab.
- Tap > New contact.
- Turn Sync contact to phone on if you want the contact to sync to your phone’s contacts.
Add a contact from an existing chat
- Go to the Chats tab.
- Tap a chat from a number you don't have saved. You should see a phone number rather than a name.
- Tap the top of the chat to see Chat Info.
- Tap Save and enter details.
- Turn Sync contact to phone on if you want the contact to sync to your phone’s contacts. Tap Save.
Or, you can open the chat and tap Add > Create new contact. Enter details and turn Sync contact to phone on if you want the contact to sync to your phone’s contacts. Tap Save.
Add a contact from groups
- Find a message from someone who isn't saved as a contact.
- Tap the person's profile photo.
- Tap > Save, then enter contact details.
- Turn Sync contact to phone on if you want the contact to sync to your phone’s contacts. Tap Save.
Edit a contact
- Go to the Chats tab.
- Tap
- Tap the name of the contact you’d like to edit.
- Tap the contact’s name at the top.
- Tap > Edit.
- You can choose to turn Sync contact to phone on or off. If you turn it off, it will be deleted from your phone's address book and only saved in WhatsApp.
- Tap Save.
Note: WhatsApp users set their own profile name and photo, so if a contact didn't set a profile photo, there's no way you can add one for that contact. Instead, you'll see an empty white profile on a gray background. In older versions of WhatsApp, the photo associated with that contact from your phone's address book would be displayed.
You can share the contact information of one or more contacts within an individual or group chat.
To share a contact:
- Open the chat with the individual or group you want to send a contact to.
- Tap > Contact.
- Select the contact you'd like to share with the group or individual.
- Tap >
The recipient can now add the contact to their own address book or message them directly from the message.
Delete a contact
- Go to the Chats tab.
- Tap .
- Tap the name of the contact you’d like to delete.
- Tap the contact’s name at the top.
- Tap > Edit > > Delete.
- Note: If you’ve synced this contact to your phone, it will be deleted from WhatsApp and from your phone’s address book.
Deleting a contact won't delete the chat history you have with them. You can learn how to delete a chat in this article.
