Group admins can change settings to allow either only admins or all members to edit group info, send messages, or add people to a group.
If a group was started with fewer than 33 members, all group members can:
  • Add others to the group
  • Send messages
  • Change group information including the group name, icon, and description
If a group has more than 256 members, Edit group settings will default to Only admins.

Change group info settings

  1. Open the WhatsApp group chat, then click the group name.
  2. Click Group settings > Edit group info.
  3. Choose to allow All members or Only admins to edit the group info.
  4. Click Confirm.

Change group message settings

  1. Open the WhatsApp group chat, then click the group name.
  2. Click Group settings > Send messages.
  3. Choose to allow All members or Only admins to send messages.
  4. Click Confirm.

Change who can add members

Group admins can change group settings to allow members to add others to a group.
  1. Open the WhatsApp group chat, then click the group name.
  2. Click Group settings.
  3. Choose to turn on Approve new members.
    • When turned on, admins must approve anyone who wants to join the group.
    • When turned off, this group is open for people to join without admin approval.
  4. Click Confirm.
Note:
  • If you’re the only group admin and leave the group, another member is chosen at random to become the new admin.
  • If you rejoin the group and would like to be an admin again, you need to ask the group admin to make you one.
  • You can contact an admin of a group you’re in by clicking Group Info, then clicking the name of the admin you want to message.
