About end-to-end encrypted backup
End-to-end encryption ensures only you and the person you're communicating with can read or listen to what is sent. Nobody in between, not even WhatsApp, can access the content of your communications. With end-to-end encrypted backup, you can add the same protection to your iCloud or Google Drive backup.
Password protection
When you create an end-to-end encrypted backup, your messages and media are stored in the cloud. They’re secured by a password or a 64-digit encryption key. You can change your password as long as you have access to your previous password or key.
Turn off end-to-end encrypted backup
You can use your password or key, biometrics, or your device PIN to turn off end-to-end encrypted backup. When off, your messages and media will no longer automatically back up to the cloud.
Device-level backups on iPhone
If you have device backups turned on for your entire iPhone, your WhatsApp chat history will be excluded from the device backups once you turn on end-to-end encrypted backup.
To learn how we collect and process your data, including your end-to-end encrypted backup, see the WhatsApp Privacy Policy.
