How to react to messages

You can react to messages in individual and group chats with emojis. You can view all reactions to a message by tapping the emoji below the message.

React to a message

  1. Tap and hold a message.
  2. Tap an emoji to react or tap
    add
    to select an emoji from your keyboard.
Note:
  • When you add a reaction, only the sender of the message being reacted to will receive a notification.
  • You can only add one reaction to a message.
  • Reactions to disappearing messages will disappear when the message disappears.
  • It’s not possible to hide reactions or reaction counts.

React to a photo, gif, or video

  1. Tap and hold a photo, gif, or video.
  2. Tap an emoji to react or tap
    add
    to select an emoji from your keyboard.
Alternatively, tap on the image to open the media viewer. Select one of the displayed emojis or tap the add emoji icon to select an emoji from your keyboard.

Change your reaction

  1. Tap and hold a message, photo, gif, or video you reacted to.
    • Alternatively, tap the emoji below the message.
  2. Tap a different emoji or tap
    add
    to select an emoji from your keyboard.

Remove your reaction

  1. Tap and hold a message, photo, gif, or video you reacted to.
    • Alternatively, tap the emoji below the message.
  2. Tap your reaction to remove it.
Note:
  • A notification won’t be sent to the sender of the message if you remove a reaction.
  • Recipients might see your reaction before you remove it or if WhatsApp fails to remove it. You won’t be notified when removing a reaction fails.
To react to a message while using the Voice-Over feature on your iPhone:
  1. Touch the message you want to react to.
  2. Flick down until Voice-Over says “react.”
  3. Double tap your screen. A list of reactions will appear.
  4. Swipe left and right to navigate the list of reactions.
  5. When you find your desired reaction, double tap your screen to react.
