About Google Account backups

Android
You can back up your WhatsApp chat history using your Google Account. The cloud storage in your Google Account is provided and managed by Google.
If you go over the storage limit, you’ll need to free up space in your Google Account to resume backups. You can see how much of your cloud storage you’re currently using and review storage options here.
You can free up space in your Google Account storage here. Learn how to free up storage on WhatsApp here.
Note:
- Backup files can vary in size and might use mobile data. Connect your phone to Wi-Fi before backing up your chats to your Google Account to avoid possible mobile data charges.
- WhatsApp backups are tied to the phone number and Google Account they’re created with.
- WhatsApp backups that haven’t been updated in 5 months might be automatically deleted by Google. To avoid the loss of any backups, we recommend backing up your WhatsApp data often.
- Your first backup to your Google Account might take awhile to complete. We recommend leaving your phone connected to a power source.
- Every time you create a Google Account backup using the same Google Account, the previous backup will be overwritten by Google. There's no way to restore an older Google Account backup.
- Chats you back up aren't protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption while in your Google Account unless you’ve turned on end-to-end encrypted backup. Learn how here.
- If you’re having issues with your Google Account backup, chats stored in your phone’s WhatsApp database are available if you’re using OS 9 or below. Learn more about restoring chats from your phone’s WhatsApp database here.
