How to create and invite into a group

You can create a WhatsApp group with up to 1024 members.

Create a group

  1. Tap
    new chat
    > New group.
  2. Search for or select contacts to add to the group. Then, tap
    new chat arrow
    .
    • If your contact doesn’t have a WhatsApp account, you can choose to send them an invite link via SMS.
  3. You can choose to enter a group name. This will be the name of the group that all participants will see.
    • The name limit is 100 characters.
    • You can tap
      emoji
      to add an emoji to your subject.
    • You can add a group icon by tapping
      camera
      icon. You can choose to use your Camera, Gallery, Emoji & stickers, or Search web to add an image. Once set, the icon will appear next to the group in Chats.
    • You can choose to:
      • Turn Disappearing messages on.
      • Tap Group permissions to change group settings.
  4. Tap
    new chat checkmark
    when you're finished.
Note: If a group name isn’t added, the name will be a list of the users in the group.

Invite into a group

Invite into groups via links or QR code

If you're a group admin, you can invite people to join a group by sharing a link or QR code with them.
  1. Open the WhatsApp group chat, then tap the group name.
  2. Tap Invite via link.
  3. Choose to Send link via WhatsApp, Copy link, Share link, or QR code.
    • If sending through WhatsApp, search for or select contacts, then tap
      send
      .
The admin can always make the previous invite link invalid and create a new link. To reset the link, tap Reset link > Reset link. Once an invite link has been reset, it's not possible to restore the previous invite link.
Note: Any WhatsApp user you share an invite link with can join the group, so only use this feature with people you trust. It’s possible for someone to forward the link to other people, who could then join the group without additional approval from the group admin.

Invite into groups through a group context card

A group context card gives people more information about the group when they’re first added. When you first create a group, you can also invite people through the context card. If you’re a group admin, you can invite people to join a group with the group context card.
  1. Open the group chat you want to add members to.
  2. Tap + Add members.
  3. Select members.
  4. Tap
