How to create and invite into a group

You can create a WhatsApp group with up to 1024 members.

Create a group

  1. Click
    New Chat (speech bubble with plus sign)
    .
  2. Click New group.
  3. Search for or select contacts and click
    Next (right arrow within circle)
    .
    • Click Group name (optional) to create a name for the group. Click
      Emoji (smiley face)
      to add an emoji. The name limit is 100 characters.
    • Click Add group icon to add a group icon. Select a photo from your device and click Open.
    • Click the drop down under Disappearing messages to turn on messages that disappear after a selected duration. Select 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days.
    • Click Group permissions to edit permissions for members and admins.
  4. Click
    Alternate Check Mark (white checkmark within circle)
    .

Invite contacts to group

  1. Open the group chat and click the group name.
  2. Click Add member and select contacts.
  3. Click

By default, only admins can create group links to invite new members to a group.
  1. Open the group chat and click the group name.
  2. Click Invite to group via link.
    • Click Send link via WhatsApp to send link as a WhatsApp message. Select contacts and click
      Alternate Check Mark (white checkmark within circle)
      .
    • Click Copy link to copy the link. Paste the link to share.
Note: You should only share group links with people you trust. Anyone with a group link can join your group and forward the link to other people.
If you’re a group admin, you can deactivate a group invite link and create a new one.
  1. Open the group chat and click the group name.
  2. Click Invite to group via link.
  3. Click Reset link > Reset link.
Note: Once an invite link has been reset, the previous link can’t be restored.
If you’re a group admin, you can change group permissions to allow members to invite others with group links.
  1. Open the group chat and click the group name.
  2. Click Group permissions > Add other members.
    • When turned on, group members can create group invite links.
    • When turned off, only admins can create group invite links.
Note: If you’re a group admin, you can change group permissions to allow admins to approve new members before they’re allowed to join the group. Learn more about how to change group admin settings.

Invite into groups through a group context card

A group context card gives people more information about the group when they’re first added. When you first create a group, you can also invite people through the context card. If you’re a group admin, you can invite people to join a group with the group context card.
  1. Open the group chat you want to add members to.
  2. Click Add members.
  3. Select members.
  4. Click
    Alternate Check Mark (white checkmark within circle)
    .
  5. Click
    Check (checkmark within circle)
    > Add member.
