How to reset your two-step verification PIN
Two-step verification is an optional feature that adds more security to your WhatsApp account. You can learn more about two-step verification in this help article.
There are several ways to reset your two-step verification PIN.
- If you forgot your PIN, you can reset it in your WhatsApp Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Change PIN.
- If you are re-registering your WhatsApp account and need to reset your PIN, you can use an email address or SMS one-time password (OTP).
Reset PIN during re-registration with an email address
If you provided an email address when you set up two-step verification or added it in your WhatsApp Settings, you can reset the PIN immediately by requesting a reset link.
To reset the PIN:
- Open WhatsApp > tap Forgot PIN? > Send Email. A reset link will be sent to the email address you provided.
- In the email, follow the reset link and tap Confirm.
- Open WhatsApp > tap Forgot PIN? > Reset.
Keep in mind, deleting or reinstalling WhatsApp won't disable or reset the PIN for two-step verification.
Reset PIN during re-registration with SMS OTP
If you received your 6-digit registration code via email when registering your account, you can reset your PIN with an SMS OTP.
- Open WhatsApp > tap Forgot PIN? > tap Send code.
- Enter the SMS OTP.
If you can’t reset your two-step verification PIN, you’ll need to wait 7 days to reset it. The 7-day period begins from the last time your account successfully connected to WhatsApp. You may not be able to reset your PIN right away if:
- You didn't provide an email address to reset the PIN.
- You forgot the email address to reset the PIN.
- Someone else set up the two-step verification PIN before you started using this phone number.
- You received your 6-digit registration code via email when registering your account.
- You can’t receive your OTP via SMS on the number associated with your account.
- Someone else might have set up the two-step verification PIN before you started using this phone number.
- Note: After you verify your phone number, anyone using your account is automatically logged out and your account is protected.
The 7-day period begins from the last time your account successfully connected to WhatsApp.
After the 7-day period, you can reset the PIN in your WhatsApp Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Change PIN.
Note: For security purposes, there isn’t an option for us to speed up the 7-day timeframe or disable your account after two-step verification is enabled. The two-step verification PIN is different from the 6-digit registration code you receive via SMS or phone call.
