How to make a video call

Video calling lets you call your contacts using WhatsApp for free, even if they’re in another country. Video calling uses your internet connection. Calling on WhatsApp is supported on Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 and newer and macOS 11 and newer.

Use video calling

To make or receive video calls on WhatsApp:
  • You’ll need an active internet connection on your computer.
  • WhatsApp needs access to your computer’s microphone and camera.
  • You’ll need to have an audio output device, microphone, and camera connected to your computer for calls. Video calling isn’t supported on devices without a camera.
Note: Use a headset for the best audio. Using a separate external microphone and speaker devices might cause echo.

Make a video call

  1. Open the individual chat with the contact you’d like to call.
  2. Click

During the call, you can mute or unmute your microphone by clicking

or turn your camera off or on by clicking

. To end a call, click
end call
.

Answer a video call

When you receive an incoming call, you’ll see a notification on your screen. You can click:
  • Accept call to accept the call.
  • Decline
    end call
    to decline the call.
  • more
    to open microphone and video settings.
  • Click x to ignore the call.

Switch between voice and video calls

While on a voice call with a contact, you can request to switch to a video call. The contact you’re voice calling can click Switch to switch the call or Decline to decline.
  1. Click

  2. The voice call will switch to a video call if your contact accepts the switch.
Note: Once the contact turns their video off, the call will be switched to a voice call.

Change group call grid layout

In group video calls, you have the option to use Speaker view or regular grid view. Speaker view prioritizes whoever is currently speaking while regular grid video will show all participants in your call (up to 32 people in total and 16 people per page).

  2. Select Gallery Grid or Speaker Grid.

Picture-in-picture

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows you to watch videos from supported services within WhatsApp instead of needing to go to another app. You can also continue messaging in the chat while watching the video. If a video is eligible for PiP playback, a play button will appear on the video link's preview.
Note: Videos will only play PiP if they're posted by public accounts.
