About WhatsApp Android backups

In the coming months, if you choose to backup your WhatsApp chats on an Android device, your backup will start counting toward your Google Account storage limit.
If you go over the storage limit, you’ll need to free up space in your Google Account to resume backups. You can see how much storage you’re currently using and review storage options here.

Note:
  • This change will roll out to Beta users starting in December 2023, and will slowly roll out to all WhatsApp Android users across the first half of 2024.
  • We’ll let you know 30 days before this change happens with a banner in WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
  • If you don’t want to back up chats to your Google Account, you can still transfer your chats between Android devices using WhatsApp Chat Transfer. Learn how here.
