Can’t transfer chat history
Note:
Don't delete your old phone's data, reset your old phone, or uninstall WhatsApp on your old phone until you can confirm the data has successfully transferred to your new phone. In case your transfer fails, gets stuck, or you receive an error, your data will still be available on your old phone. If you’re having issues transferring your chats between two iPhones or two Android devices, the most common reasons why are:
QR code issues
During the transfer process, you will be asked to scan a QR code. Make sure you’re scanning the correct QR code that’s shown after you complete registration.
If the QR code isn’t appearing, make sure your phones are both connected to the same Wi-Fi, live location is turned on, and you’ve accepted all requested permissions.
WhatsApp is already active on my new device
You can only transfer your chats before you’ve activated WhatsApp on your new phone. Before starting the transfer from your old device, make sure you uninstall WhatsApp on your new device. Learn how here.
Note: You can’t merge new chats from your new phone and old chats from your old phone.
My new device has a different phone number
It's not possible to transfer your chats to a new phone number. You’ll need to change your phone number on your old device to your new phone number before transferring chats to your new phone. Learn how here.
Verification issues
If you’ve attempted to transfer your chats multiple times and are experiencing wait times for a verification code, there’s no way to speed up the process. You may be able to receive a code by email. Learn more here.
Using WhatsApp Chats Transfer to transfer chats between two different types of devices
Chats can only be transferred between two of the same type of device using WhatsApp Chat Transfer. To transfer chats from an Android device to an iPhone, read this article. To transfer chats from an iPhone to an Android device, read this article.
Note:
- If you receive an error message, restart both phones and start the transfer process again.
- Using non-WhatsApp chat transfer apps isn’t supported and may cause loss of chats.
- WhatsApp doesn’t delete your chats during a transfer and your chats aren’t lost if an error occurs.
